Confession: I detest running

RunnersI really detest running. Do I need to? Yes, it would be good for my heart and weight loss. However, I find absolutely no pleasure in running. I never did, even when I was 102 pounds for many years. It has never “felt good”. Oh, I’ve heard the stories about getting beyond a certain point and then the chemicals/endorphins kick in, yada, yada, yada. Not me. I feel nothing good. I’ve tried good shoes, a positive attitude, ipods and music, hiring a physical trainer to keep me going, and guess what? I still detest running. I WISH it felt good and was something I craved. But I don’t. I will not ever enjoy running.

For years I have been envious of runners and wanted to like it, but every time I tried I was unable to see it through. Finally, this year, I achieved the goal of running (mostly) a 5K with the help of a good friend. In my experience, you must run with a similarly motivated friend to keep you having fun. But that’s just what worked for me. If running doesn’t work for you, try something else. It’s only in the last 2 years that I’ve actually come to enjoy exercising.

This post kind of made me laugh. I never EVER tried running until a couple years ago. I was in a new area where it seemed everyone ran and loved it, so I wanted to find out what I was missing. I totally agree with Jennifer that you need a running buddy with similar goals. My running time has turned into great social time and I totally love it, but I wouldn’t without my buddy.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I think I could get through the act of running with a friend and emotionally know I was doing the right thing. It’s the physical feeling I really don’t like. Out of breath, sides hurt…I am not graceful either. I stumble when I run. I’m sure my physical trainer still laughs…. :) We’ll have to see what happens.
