Confession: I throw stuff down the basement

StairsI don’t mean that I figureatively throw stuff in the basement. I mean I literally open the basement door and throw stuff down the basement stairs. Sometimes stuff lands on the stairs and other times it makes it all the way down the stairs. We don’t use our basement for much, although it is roomy and finished. We have enough square footage on the other two levels that we can afford to use the basement only when it’s needed. This is a dangerous privilege, as I often clean the main-floor and declutter by open the basement door, pitching stuff into the great dark hole, and slamming the door again. It becomes a problem the next time one of us needs to run down the basement. An innocent decent can turn deadly by tripping over empty boxes, toys, winter boots, and gift bags. Each time I spend an hour cleaning the stairs I vow to change this habit…until I need to clean up again.

Sounds like my husband, except he moves things from the living room to the kitchen so that he can watch the game. THE KITCHEN!!! And then he wants points for cleaning the living room, which I refuse to acknowledge because now I have a double mess in the kitchen. Sheesh!
So, what is this de-cluttering thing I hear everyone talking about?

I did this all the time, in our old house especially. The laundry room was downstairs and there was constantly a pile of clothes on the steps and bottom of the stairs…Just think how much MORE you would be doing this, if you had less square footage, less room for stuff! Maybe you should de-clutter out the door to your car, and to the local thrift store instead of to the basement! :)

OMG…I laughed hysterically. I think I may have pulled a muscle in my stomach from laughing so hard. Just tell the kids that you’re doing them a favor in that the ghouls can’t climb the cluttered stairs.
